"Le Maschere Della Commedia" - Tuba and Piano
A suite in four movements for tuba and piano, “Le Maschere Della Commedia” is based on four different characters of the “Commedia dell’arte”, an early form of professional theatre popular throughout Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Harlequin, the main personage in the first movement (Arlecchino’s March) is depicted as a guileful, brazen and always high spirited man. A master of disguises, he assumes a variety of professional mantles to misrepresent his status, often masquerading as a foreign nobleman.
The second movement, “Pedrolino, the Faithful Servant” pictures Pierrot, a simpleminded and honest servant. Pedrolino functioned in the Commedia as an unsuccessful lover and a victim of the pranks of his fellow comedians.
Colombine, the character portrayed in the third movement (Colombina’s Waltz), is a comic servant playing the tricky slave type, Harlequin’s mistress and wife of Pierrot.
The fourth movement (Il Capitano, the Extravagant) describes the personage of the captain. This unsympathetic character was the prototype of a pretentious but cowardly military man and one of the earliest of the commedia dell’arte personages.
